Eye Unit

The Eye Unit was established in 1975 through a collaborative effort between PCEA Kikuyu Hospital and Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM), a German non-governmental organization.

In 1989, a new eye ward and theatre block were added, funded by CBM and EZE, both charitable German organizations. Subsequent expansions have included two additional examination rooms, an optical workshop, an eye drop production unit, administrative offices, and a student hostel.

Over the years, the Eye Unit has grown alongside the hospital, with patient numbers increasing significantly. Today, it handles between 70,000 and 80,000 patients annually, reflecting its critical role in the hospitals operations. The reputation and impact of the Eye Unit are such that PCEA Kikuyu Hospital is widely recognized as a leading eye care facility in the region.

Despite this recognition, awareness of the full range of services offered by the Eye Unit and the broader hospital remains limited in some quarters. Notably, it is the only unit in Kenya with a dedicated Low Vision Department, highlighting its unique contribution to eye care in the country.

Accurate and timely diagnoses are key to effective treatment and management. The Eye Unit is equipped with a wide range of modern clinical diagnostic equipment, enabling precise assessment and care. All our surgeons are registered LASER specialists, offering laser treatments for diabetic retinopathy and Nd-YAG laser procedures for after-cataract capsular opacities.

Clinics
Our Eye Unit has nine examination rooms serving up to 60,000 patients annually. Accurate diagnosis is key to effective treatment. Our surgeons are registered LASER specialists, providing treatments for diabetic retinopathy and after-cataract complications.
